How to Spend Less on Moving

A couple weeks ago, my wife and I moved back into the city after a brief hiatus as newlyweds in the “boonies”. As moves go, it went pretty smoothly thanks to the generous help of friends and family.

Moving ranks right up there with getting a tooth pulled and cleaning out the gutters. It's no fun at all.

I've managed to learn a few things over the years from others and via my own experiences. I thought I'd share a few of those tips and ideas which I hope will help you save a few bucks and make your move more palatable.

  • Start early. Moving ranks right up there as one of the biggest stressors of life. If you are adequately prepared and packed for it, you won't freak so much as the day approaches.
  • Get the help you need. I hate asking for help. I feel like I'm inconveniencing folks. Especially when I hate moving so bad! Why would I want to bring that upon someone else? But, there is a certain karma surrounding moving. One year you may be helping a friend move, the next you'll be helping them. Everyone moves at one time or another. Either you'll be receiving the help or you'll be giving it. So, suck it up Aaron and ask for the help.
  • Rent a moving truck or ask a friend for his pick-up. I once came across a bumper sticker on a pick-up that read, “Yes, this is my truck. No, I will not help you move.” Still, it doesn't hurt to ask – especially if it is a relative. Moving trucks can be rented for a decent price. Less expensive than hiring a moving company.
  • Boxes. When moving, you'll need storage for your valuables. Look no further than your local grocery store or shipping department at work. No need to buy these at the store.
  • Deduct your moving expenses on your taxes. Yes, this is legal. To find out which ones you might qualify for, check this article at
